Lesson 6 of 15 · Planning

Who should I engage?

Design, construction, statutory submission and licensed trade work are different responsibilities.

Designer and contractor roles

An interior designer may develop space and finish proposals. A renovation contractor coordinates and carries out the agreed work. The scope, authority to instruct subcontractors, and responsibility for drawings or site supervision should be written down.

Qualified and licensed roles

A Qualified Person is a registered architect or Professional Engineer acting within the applicable submission role. EMA says electrical work should be carried out or supervised by a Licensed Electrical Worker. PUB requires Licensed Plumbers for regulated water service and sanitary plumbing work, while listing limited simple works that others may perform.

Verify the person and appointment

  • Check the relevant official register
  • Name the individual, not only the company
  • State deliverables and submission duties
  • Record fees, exclusions and inspection stages

Before you move on

  • Each role has written deliverables
  • Licences checked where required
  • Submission responsibility is named
  • No directory listing is treated as a quality guarantee
