Lesson 9 of 15 · Quoting
Compare renovation quotations line by line
Two totals are not comparable when quantities, materials, allowances or exclusions differ.
Normalise the scope
Create one comparison row for each work item. Put each contractor's quantity, specification, price and exclusion beside it. Mark absent or unclear information rather than guessing.
Use a clarification log
- Question asked
- Contractor's dated response
- Resulting price or scope change
- Whether the revised quotation includes it
Assess the whole offer
Consider clarity, relevant experience, programme, change process, payment exposure and the people who will run the job. Accreditation or directory status can be relevant, but it is not a guarantee of outcome.
Before you move on
- Scope gaps marked
- Allowances compared
- Exclusions understood
- Clarifications reflected in a revised offer
